Stamford Root Canals

The words “root canal” have developed such a stigma over the years that they instantaneously strike fear. This procedure has progressed so much that it is virtually painless and all your expectations have become outdated. Our office uses the most recent technology to ensure optimal results with the little retreat requirement. Endodontic treatment is a choice to keep your natural teeth as a healthy foundation for chewing and biting for years to come. Years ago when a tooth was badly infected or had significant decay, it was doomed to be extracted. Today over 14 million root canals are done globally every year. However effective a tooth replacement may be, nothing is as effective as a natural tooth.

Every dentist receives endodontic treatment training in dental school. Endodontists require two-three additional years of training in order to aquire specialization in this field. This is all they do, which means their experience and qualifications are the best. If your dentist refers you to an endodonist it is most likely that your case is a little more involved and they are not comfortable treating it themselves. Endodontists perform a myriad of specialty procedures when the general dentists can’t. Whether it be a calcified canal or a problem diagnosis, they can’t treat the source of oral or facial pain. We are proud to have Endodontists on our staff to ensure you are given the best care possible.

Endodontic treatment comes for the Greek words “Endo” for inside and “odont” for tooth. This procedure strictly takes place inside of the tooth. When the pulp of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected, root canal therapy is performed. This can occur for many reasons: deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or a crack or chip in the tooth. Root Canals are also common when there has been trauma to a tooth. If a patient has had a blow to the face, even though there may not be any visible damage, the pulp may have still been damaged by the force. If untreated it can cause severe pain or lead to an abcess. Signs of pulp damage: pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot and cold, discoloration of the tooth, swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums. Sometimes, much like the unharmed tooth…their may be no symptoms.

During treatment the doctor removes the inflamed or infected pulp, cleans and shapes the inside of the tooth, then fills and seals the space. Afterwards, the general dentists will restore the tooth with a crown. After the restoration the tooth continues to function like any other tooth.

When the pulp is too damaged, the only alternative to endodontic treatment is extraction of the tooth. To restore chewing function and to prevent shifting the tooth must be replaced with an implant or a bridge.
