It’s only natural for kids to an unwarranted fear of the dentist. When children think of going to the dentist, think of an evil man or woman in a fiendish white lab coat, who will stop at nothing to rip the teeth right of kids’ mouths, all the while laughing manically. Children certainly do have wild imaginations, and it can oftentimes get the best of them. This, combined with negative images of dental professionals gleamed from movies and television programs, will often result in kids not wanting to go the dentist. It’s to the parents of these timid children to put their fears at ease, and explain to them that going to the dentist is a necessary endeavor, and that their dental health depends on it. It’s not uncommon for kids in pediatric dental office to be seen kicking and screaming in the hallways, crying bloody murder for their parents to spare them their visit to the dentist, and take to take them somewhere more preferable, such as their favorite fast food joint.
It is for this very reason, that many pediatric dental offices take various steps to make a child’s first visit to the dentist a pleasant one. Dental professionals want to instill a sense of trust in children at an early age, so that they will hopefully adopt proper dental habits for life. Dentists want to encourage repeat visits, so kids can grow and learn with a happy and healthy mouth.

Many pediatric dental offices have board games, magazines, books, and even video game consoles in their waiting rooms. Dental professionals view these benefits as a necessary expense to keep kids in line. Parents view these trappings as a means of keeping kids at ease. And the children just view these as fun activities. Many pediatric dentists also give rewards to children who undergo their dental treatment with little to no fuss. This can be something as simple as a balloon, or something more elaborate. Some pediatric dental offices even have an intricate rewards program where patients accumulate points through successful visits to the dentist, and there is a sliding scale where they can redeem their collected points for prizes.
