Have you ever wanted to become a dentist?
Sometimes, being a dentist is something that some people dream about from the day they are born. However, other times, throughout a person’s life, one may start thinking about what they want to do and the dental profession comes to mind. Maybe you walked into a dentists office one day, had some work done, and walked out thinking that that was the profession for you. Or maybe you were in class in elementary school and you were learning how to take care of your teeth and a dentist came in and taught you about his or her profession. Many times, people who eventually become dentists take a few classes in high school and college and realize that that is the calling for them. Making a profession out of taking care of people young and old is something to admire in a person. However, becoming a dentist may not be as easy as one may think.
Everyone knows how important it is to see a dentist. Going twice a year for a clean up and check up is essential to the health of your teeth, mouth, and gums. You want to go to a dentist you can trust and who makes you comfortable while you are there. Looking on the walls of your dentists’ office, you may notice many different certificates and degrees. Long before those degrees, your dentist most likely did a lot of research to figure out what school he or she wanted to go to. From there, they had to take many pre-dental classes and an exam to get in. Then they had to send in many applications and follow strict rules and regulations to get into the school of their choice. Once accepted into an accredited dental school, they took many classes which take about four years to complete. Some people finish early, some finish late, but the majority of dental graduates finish right on time. During their final two years of dental school, the students actually work with dentists in their area and work on patients. Once they complete all the required coursework and field study, they receive a Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, depending on which field they focused more on. Many people think that after you graduate you become a dentist, but that is not true. You still have to take a written and practical exam to get your license to practice. Once this is obtained, you are able to look for jobs or even start your own practice. With our economy in bad shape, you might think that the job market for a dentist is not that great. In spite of this, the demand for licensed dentists is still at the same level it was before the economy took a downward spiral. Becoming a dentist is a long process that involves years of schooling and dedication to your field. If this is a profession you would be interested in, take the time and do the research. There are never enough dentists out there.
Summary: Becoming a dentist takes many years of schooling.
