  • As jobs become harder to find, low income parents have to think outside of the box in order to make ends meet

In these dark economic times, steady employment is hard to come by.  With unemployment reaching record highs in all fifty states, a well paying and steady job is a thing to be treasured.  Far too many Americans are looking for jobs with little to no success.  The government, on both a federal and state level, is taking action to combat the current recession, but in the meantime, working class and low income families have to cope with one or perhaps two parents out of work.  This can lead a family into dire financial straits.  With one of more parents out of work, it can become increasingly difficult to make ends meet.  Too many families are forced to make impossible choice when it comes to their family’s budget just to get by.  And as jobs become scarcer by the day, many low income and poverty stricken individuals and families have to carefully plan for their financial future.  They do this by eliminating any and all unnecessary expenses.  This is to ensure that their loved ones have food, shelter, and adequate clothing.   These bare necessities are the primary concern of working parents.  Parents do not want their kids to go to school hungry and dressed in rags, but times are tough, and parents will do whatever is necessary to provide for their children.

Many out of work parents are finding creative ways to spend their time, in an effort to help the family out.  Many parents who don’t have jobs volunteer at their kid’s school in exchange for meal vouchers or some other type of non-monetary compensations.  Many parents who find themselves without jobs are willing to trade their time so that their kids can have extras in life.  They will volunteer at soccer practice, or will assist in a child’s sports team’s fundraisers, such as carwashes or bake sales.  Parents without jobs still feel the need to provide for their children, even if they can not provide monetary support.  So, they look for alternate means to help the household out.

The question becomes then how can working families stem the rising tide of economic uncertainty with one or possibly no working parent?  Besides volunteering for their child’s after school activities, many out of work parents go to night school so that they can learn a new profession or can get a raise or move to a better position in a different company.  Some working class parents even take second jobs in a last ditch effort to make ends meet.  This is in order to provide a safe haven for their family in times of economic turbulence.  The best way to find new jobs is to acquire a new set of skills that will help you become more competitive in your chosen field.  You may even want to consider switching fields, as your new field may be more resistant to changes in the national economy.  Either way, it’s always best to be on the lookout for new jobs and opportunities so you can help your loved ones.

Summary:  In the current economic crisis, jobs are becoming scarcer and families have to cope with these changes.
